Daniele Scalea

General Director of IsAG (the Italian institute of geopolitics based in Rome)

On March 13th 2013 the Conclave crowned Jorge Mario Bergoglio new Pope of the Catholic Church. The seventy-six year old Argentinian, whose parents are originated from the Italian region Piedmont, since 1998 archbishop of Buenos Aires, since 2001 Cardinal, is the first American and the first Jesuit to ascend to the pontifical seat. Viewed from outside the strictly religious sphere, his election can be read as depending on three different kinds of problems.
